How to Style your Family for Family Photos

Just like assembling the perfect look for a chart-topping girl band, choosing outfits for a family can be difficult. Finding the right balance between coordinated and too “matchy-matchy” can be one of the biggest challenges - especially when you’re working with a mix of ages, personalities & body types. I’ve pulled together my top tips for dressing your family for family photos.

Pick one person to dress first and build from there

Some things to consider when choosing who to dress first…it could be the most difficult person to dress. It could be a person that has a knockout piece they want to incorporate. It could be someone who is camera shy and wants to feel more confident. Whatever the reason, this is a great way to create a base for choosing everyone else's clothing. With the Kajer family pictured below, mom had an awesome jacket that was a great jumping off point for the rest of the family!

Pull from a colorful pattern

Using a pattern with a variety of colors is a great way to simplify choosing family outfits because it becomes less about having a vision and more about color matching. With the Uran family as an example, start with one pattern then build the group’s look from there. Balance bright colors with a dark more subtle look (like dad’s denim).

Layer your look with different textures, patterns, and accessories

Layering your look and blending different types of textiles is a great way for your family’s personality to come through your pictures. With the Welby family as an example, the plaid shirts, vests and jackets add an interesting dimension to individual photos as well as the family’s group picture. Make these patterns work together by adding a simple solid, muted vest or neutral accessory.

Go back to basics

If the thought of styling your family causes stress and drains all the fun out of family photos go back to basics with neutral and classic pieces. This works especially well if everyone isn’t living under the same roof and you can’t coordinate together. Choosing a basic color scheme is a great way to ensure your family doesn’t either clash or turn into one blob all wearing the same color. The Pohlad family did a great job with this! With their grown kids visiting from out of town and limited clothing options, they opted for a clean and timeless look blending grays, blues, green, and a touch of tan.

Some of my favorite color combinations are:

- Cream, tan and a touch of blush

- Blue, gray and green

- Navy, maroon and tan

- Yellow & blue
